A Proxy must be used as an intermediary between a licensed resource and your computer when your computer is not attached to the UCD campus network.

(If you use a UC Davis network address, you DO NOT need to use the proxy server.)

In order to use the proxy server four critical steps are required:

Step 1. Do you have UCD login ID and kerberos password?

Only faculty, current students and staff are authorized to use the proxy service.

Step 2. Change your browser cache settings

Specific cache settings are required for Internet Explorer, Mozilla, and Netscape.
Check your browser configuration against the settings
Make sure that your browser is set to verify documents every time, and that the cache is cleared.

Step 3. Add the proxy settings to your browser

Best configuration for using the library's proxy server:
Netscape: version 7.0 or higher, 6.2. or higher, 4.78 or higher
IE: version 5.5 with service pack 2 required, 6.0 with service pack 1 required.
Mozilla version 1.4

How to check what version of your browser you are using

Instructions for setting up your browser to use the proxy:
Using Windows: Using a Macintosh:
Netscape Netscape
Mozilla Mozilla (OS 9.x)
Internet Explorer 5.x & 6.x Mozilla (OS X only)
Note: Macintosh users can only access the proxy server using either Mozilla or Netscape.
Internet Explorer and Safari can not be used.

XP Users Note:

If you are using XP with Internet Explorer 6 (Service Pack 1), you may need to install a microsoft security patch. The patch can be downloaded from microsoft at:

     http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&familyid=85f35cfb-4f39-49b2-9276-f84813da415c

Connecting through AOL:

You will need to use Netscape as your browser while using the UC Davis Proxy Server.

Updates and previous versions of netscape are available at: http://wp.netscape.com/download/archive.html

Step 4. View sample screens and begin your search at the UCD Library Home Page (www.lib.ucdavis.edu).

These sample screens illustrate the operation of the proxy server and authentication.

Please Note:
Some resources may not function properly when accessed through the proxy server. A list of these resources is maintained. If you experience problems with a particular resource, please check the list.

If you are using an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that uses a firewall, please contact your ISP systems administrator to determine how best to connect to the UC Davis General Library proxy server. If your ISP systems administrator would like to consult the library's proxy server specialist, please call (530) 752-1202 or email proxyserv.

Questions, Problems?
If you have questions or experience problems using the Library's proxy service, please contact a reference librarian.
