Instructions for setting up a proxy in Internet Explorer v.5.x (Windows only)

  1. From the "Tools" menu of your browser, click on the "Internet Options" entry

  2. Click on the tab labeled "Connections"

Select (by clicking) the appropriate item in the "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network Settings" list

    DSL And Cable Modem Users

Many DSL users and Cable Modem users will not have anything listed under "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network Settings." If you do not see anything listed, follow the instructions in the green boxes instead of the regular instructions.

Some DSL and Cable Modem providers offer a secondary, back-up modem service which will have an entry in the "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network Settings" window. If that is true for your setup, follow the regular steps AND the directions in the green boxes.

If you have a DSL or cable modem listing under "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network Settings", experience indicates you should follow the regular directions AND the directions in the green boxes in most circumstances, entering the proxy configuration using both the regular settings button and the LAN settings button.

  3. Click the button labeled "Settings"

    DSL And Cable Modem Users:
use "Local Area Network (LAN) settings"

  4. Check the checkbox labeled "Use automatic configuration script"

You have now successfully completed the proxy setup
Specific cache settings are required for Internet Explorer, Mozilla, and Netscape.
Check your browser configuration against the settings
Make sure that your browser is set to verify documents every time, and that the cache is cleared.

If you follow these directions carefully and the proxy service still doesn't work, go to www.microsoft.com and download the latest service pack for your current version of IE. (You will need to upgrade from 5.0 to 5.01. Otherwise it is not necessary to upgrade to an entirely new version)

Please Note: Some resources may not function properly when accessed through the proxy server. A list of these resources is maintained. If you experience problems with a particular resource, please check the list.
